Ranthambhore Town
The area we now call Ranthambhore National Park has a fascinating history that can be traced back a thousand years, to when the fortress of Ranthambhore (from which the area takes its name) was constructed. For centuries, Ranthambhore Fort was claimed, conquered and fought over by armies of men under the control of an impressive array of emperors and kinds, including, in a celebrated assault, Akbar the Great.
In more recent times, the Ranthambhore forests came under the jurisdiction of the Maharajas of Jaipur, who indulged in their love of hunting in the area. Their passion for shooting tigers aside, the Maharajas respected nature and generally protected the forests. Hunting was only permitted during a specific period, which allowed new tigers to take the place of those that were killed during the short shooting season.
Today, echoes of these times past have merged with the reserves sublime beauty to create an area of splendid wilderness, uniquely embellished by both nature and man. The forest around three lakes at the centre of the park contains spectacular landscapes; dotted here and there with crumbling ruins, summer palaces, guard posts and temples. It is these remnants of conflict and royalty, surrounded by wild date palms and banyan trees, that create the areas exotic charm, and lie alongside the tiger at the heart of Ranthambhore mystique.
